The Guardian

This week’s creative effort went into brainstorming a game idea.

Ultimately, this lead me to the following back story and arc:

There once existed a magical forest

From the beginning of time, a human has been charged with its protection, serving as its guardian

This guardian selects their replacement as they age teaching them the ways of the forest

As the human race progressed, they took more and more advantage of the magic of the forest

Slowly, the forest began to die; the animals turned aggressive; the trees rotted…

The guardian at the time decided that the only way to protect the forest was to seal it away

He split the ties between the real forest and the magical one, hiding it from human eye

In doing so, humanity long ago forgot about the power they craved so much

Years passed

A child of 10 and their family go for a hike into a forest

The child runs ahead down a path to hide and scare his parents

He jumps behind a tree and falls into a hole in the ground that sends them through a deep pit

The child falls and falls…

The child passes out

The child awakens in the forest and calls out for his parents

They’re nowhere to be found

He walks for sometime before encountering a toad hopping along a path

The child picks up the toad and carries it for some time

The child talks to the toad for some time before discovering that it can talk

The toad offers to help him find his parents

The toad dazzles the child with the magic of the forest

The child falls in love with the forest and gains a new love for its inhabitants

Slowly, the toad works to try to convince the child that the forest needs him

That he can do anything here, and in doing so, he can help to keep the forest strong

After learning a number of mysteries and magic, the child encounters an old man in an ornate robe

This man tells the child that he must choose between his power and his parents

The child chooses his parents

The guardian retorts

The child chooses his parents

The guardian attacks

The child uses his powers to battle and overcome the guardian’s will

Along the way, he shares the unending love for his family and his desire to rejoin them

The guardian tries multiple ways to convince the child

Ultimately, the child defeats him – showing more power than the guardian could have ever imagined

In his defeat, the guardian angrily decides to send him back

The child amazes him by extending an olive branch – asking the guardian to join him

The guardian ponders

The guardian snaps his fingers – flipping dimensions and turning back into a toad

He hops into the child’s hand and the child returns him to a pocket on the child’s suspenders

The child’s love was strong enough to break the spell that was the guardian’s hatred
